O’ Kennedy, Ó Cinnéide.
Kennedy is the Anglicisation of the Gaelic Ó Cinnéide, meaning ‘ugly-headed’. The clan homeland was near Killaloe in Co. Tipperary, and was part of the Dál gCais tribal grouping. The clan claims descent from a nephew of Brian Boru, King of Ireland. The name is the sixteenth most numerous in Ireland, and is strongest in counties Tipperary in the south and Roscommon in the west. The most famous Kennedy is of course John F. Kennedy, who was thirty fifth president of the USA.
The hand knit Kennedy sweater has a trellis centre panel, flanked by cable, rope, diamond and moss stitches on either side. The trellis represents the stone walled fields of the Aran Islands, the cable is a wish for good luck, and diamond stitch represents a wish for wealth. This beautiful Aran sweater has been hand knitted in the traditional báinín (pronounced ‘baw neen’) colour, the natural white of the wool. It comes to you complete with a clan history and crest. It is made of 100% merino wool, is water repellent and breathable. It has been hand crafted in the traditional Irish style, and, with care, will last a lifetime.
